MATHEMATICS EDUCATION STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES
FIELD EXPERIENCES
In
the Mathematics Education Program, students participate in
elementary/secondary classrooms prior to student teaching.
Specifically, the elementary math methods class meets in a local
school (as space is available) and students spend one hour of the
3-hour block in the classroom with teachers and elementary
students. This hands-on experience gives students the chance to
teach a lesson and interact with children so that they can directly
apply the concepts learned in prior classes as well as in the
methods course.
In both the elementary and
secondary programs, students are afforded many opportunities to
observe mathematics classrooms. During these observations, students
can choose to teach a lesson, tutor students, or simply observe
classroom management.
STUDENT TEACHERS
Secondary Education Mathematics students can complete
their student teaching requirements locally, nationally and
internationally. Internationally, students have recently completed
student teaching experiences in New Zealand, Germany, and Ecuador.
Popular student teaching placements within the United States include
the metropolitan areas of Green Bay and Detroit. The diversity of
the student teaching setting depends greatly on the interests of the
student.
MATHCOUNTS(R)
MATHCOUNTS is a national math enrichment, coaching and
competition program that promotes middle school mathematics
achievement and is one of the most successful education partnerships
involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students.
Thousands of teachers use the
free MATHCOUNTS curriculum materials to supplement classroom
materials, as an extracurricular activity and to motivate students
to develop strong math skills.
Many of the students who are
involved in this program also participate in the MATHCOUNTS
competition series. Schools select students to complete
individually or as part of a team in one of the more than 500
written and oral competitions held nationwide. Top students advance
to the state, and ultimately, national level. MATHCOUNTS challenges
students' math skills, develops their self-confidence and rewards
them for their achievements.
Each year NMU students have the
opportunity to coach a mathcounts middle school team at various
middle schools. NMU supports student travel expenses to regional
and state competitions.
