Position in Mathematics:
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science invites
applications for a tenure-track position in mathematics at the rank
of assistant professor beginning with the 2008-2009 academic year.
Successful candidates must have a Ph.D. in an area of the
mathematical sciences by August, 2008. Experience or interest in
teaching on-line is desirable.
Northern Michigan University is
primarily an undergraduate institution with a number of master's
degree programs. Our department offers bachelor's degrees in
mathematics, mathematics education, and computer science, and a
Master of Science degree in mathematics education. The department is
in the process of developing a master's program in modern applied
mathematics.
Areas of interest within the
faculty of mathematics include statistics, logic, optimization
theory, nonsmooth analysis, and topology. The department places a
special emphasis on teaching. We also value a serious commitment to
research. (We see a significant connection between teaching and
scholarship). Prior successful undergraduate teaching experience is
highly desirable. Also desirable are things such as knowledge of, or
experience with, Project NExT, awards for excellence in teaching, or
experience in directing undergraduate research projects.
The candidate's area of interest
should complement the current research activities within the
department in the broad areas of optimization theory, nonsmooth
analysis, and variational inequalities.

rank of instructor beginning with the 2008-2009 academic year.
Successful candidates must have a master's degree in Computer
Science or in a related field by August, 2008.
The curriculum consists of a wide variety of small and medium sized
classes. The applicant should have a record of teaching excellence,
good communication skills in English, and the ability to teach a
wide range of undergraduate computer science courses.
