We have strong programs in both secondary and elementary
mathematics education. Our mathematics education faculty
are leaders in their discipline and are involved in many
professional activities which give our students valuable
opportunities and experiences. Our graduates have had no
difficulty in obtaining positions in what is now a growing
job market in mathematics teaching.
Students may also specialize in a
traditional mathematics program leading to a degree in
Liberal Arts. Jobs in industry and business are available
for mathematics majors, and our top students in mathematics
have been accepted in major graduate schools in recent
years.
I am particularly
proud of the mathematics and computer science faculty here
at Northern. Most of us have doctorates from major graduate
schools, yet we see our primary responsibility as teaching,
which is not the case in some larger universities. Classes
are relatively small, and the faculty are always available
to answer your questions.
If you have any
questions about the programs in our department please
contact me at math_cs@nmu.edu. If you would like to talk to me
personally, please dial the NMU Prospective Student
Information Line at 1-800-682-9797. Ask the Admissions
Office receptionist to transfer you to the Department of
Mathematics & Computer Science. I look forward to talking
with you.
Sincerely,
G. Jailan Zalmai, Department Head
